Mastitis is no fun, and many parents feel anxious when it happens. At Milk+Honey Lactation & Infant Feeding, we want to help you understand what it is, how to treat it safely, and when it’s time to seek medical care.

What Is Mastitis?
Mastitis is defined as inflammation of the mammary glands. It can cause localized pain, swelling, redness, and sometimes flu-like symptoms. Most importantly, mastitis is often physiological rather than bacterial, meaning that your body is reacting to milk stasis, blocked ducts, or tension in the breast rather than an infection.
Treating Mastitis Like a Sport Injury
For most cases, treating mastitis involves a “less is more” approach:
Rest: Give your body a chance to heal. Even short periods of rest can help your immune system respond.
Ice or cold packs: Helps reduce inflammation and soothe discomfort.
Anti-inflammatory medications or supplements: Ibuprofen or natural anti-inflammatory strategies can ease swelling and pain.
Light lymphatic massage: Gently massaging the breast toward the nipple can encourage milk flow and relieve pressure.
This approach often resolves physiological mastitis without the need for antibiotics.
When Antibiotics Are Necessary
In rare cases, mastitis can be bacterial. Signs that you may need antibiotics include:
High fever
Increasing pain or swelling
Red, painful, or hot “wedge-shaped” areas on the breast
Chills or flu-like symptoms
If you notice any of these warning signs, contact your OB, midwife, or healthcare provider immediately.
Finding the Root Cause
Even after symptoms resolve, it’s important to identify the underlying cause to prevent recurrence. Common contributors include:
Poor latch or inefficient milk transfer
Blocked ducts or oversupply
Tight clothing or restricted movement
Stress or fatigue
Our IBCLCs can help you troubleshoot and create a plan to prevent future episodes while supporting your breastfeeding journey.
